Wife Who Boiled Husband Alive Found Guilty of Murder

Corinna Baines Doused Husband with Scalding Sugar Water

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that Corinna Baines, 59, fatally burned her husband Michael Baines on 14 July 2020 at their home in Neston. The couple had been married for 38 years, with Corinna acting as Michael’s carer.

Following a bitter family argument the day before, Corinna boiled water, mixed it with sugar to make it stickier, then poured the scalding mixture over Michael while he lay in bed. The vicious attack caused burns over more than a third of his body.

Brutal Act After Family Dispute

On 13 July, tensions flared between Corinna, her daughter, and Michael. Though the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, it left Corinna “livid” according to reports. She tried to calm down with family support but later called relatives to discuss the incident.

Just past midnight, she carried out the horrific attack. Afterward, she went to a neighbour, tearfully admitting, “I’ve hurt him, I’ve hurt him really bad. I think I’ve killed him.”

Victim Hospitalised but Dies Weeks Later

Michael was rushed to Whiston Hospital’s Burns Unit, where he was treated for five weeks. Despite intensive care, he tragically died on 18 August 2020.

Confession and Court Verdict

Initially denying full responsibility, Corinna later admitted her actions but claimed she lost control. The jury at Chester Crown Court rejected her manslaughter plea and convicted her of murder.

Crown Advocate Jayne Morris stated: “Corinna Baines killed Michael in a particularly brutal and painful way. Despite her confession to manslaughter, the evidence showed deliberate and considered actions driven by anger and a desire for vengeance.”

She is set to be sentenced on 9 July 2021. The CPS expressed their condolences to the devastated Baines family.
