Brutal Hate Crime Shakes London Cemetery

Three weeks ago today, Ranjith, known as Roy, was brutally attacked and killed in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. From the start, police have treated the case as a homophobic hate crime.

Specialist Crime officers have launched an intense investigation, scouring the entire 27-acre park for clues. Despite quick progress, cops are now renewing their call for witnesses to come forward.

To reassure the public, Met officers will be posted at the park’s entrances from 10pm tonight until 6am Monday, 6 September. They’ll hand out witness appeal leaflets and speak to park visitors.

A photo of Roy has been released, hoping the image sparks recognition. Described as a gentle, friendly man, Roy came to the UK from Sri Lanka and was a devout Buddhist.

Detective Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett, leading the investigation, said: “This is a horrific murder and my thoughts are with Ranjith’s family and loved ones. Such incidents remain thankfully rare, but we are working relentlessly to bring the perpetrator to justice.”

He added, “There is absolutely no place in London for hate crimes. The Met is committed to tackling all forms of hate and supporting victims.”

Derek Lee from the LGBT+ Advisory Group urged anyone with information to speak up. “This terrible crime is causing deep fear in Tower Hamlets and London’s LGBTQ+ community. We’re advising police on ways to keep parks safe and ask everyone to be vigilant, especially late at night.”
