Carer Jailed for Manslaughter After Toddler Dies from Horrific Head Injuries

Jessica Dalgleish’s Tragic Death

Jessica Dalgleish suffered catastrophic head injuries while in the care of Paul Marsh at her Sandgate home near Folkestone in December 2019. Airlifted to a London hospital, she died just three days later.

Paul Marsh Convicted and Sentenced

Following a thorough probe by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, Marsh was charged with manslaughter and child cruelty. On 3 November 2021, he was found guilty. On Monday 20 December, the 27-year-old ex-Lydd resident was jailed for 11 years at Maidstone Crown Court.

Shocking Details Emerge

  • Marsh was looking after Jessica on 21 December 2019 when he called emergency services at 3.10pm, claiming he found her dazed on the floor.
  • Paramedics identified serious head injuries and arranged an air ambulance to a specialist London hospital. Jessica died on 24 December.
  • Marsh claimed she fell down the stairs, but medics said her injuries didn’t match a fall.
  • Experts concluded she was likely thrown against a hard surface like a bed headboard.
  • Jessica had bruises days before, suggesting prior abuse by Marsh that went unreported.
  • Witnesses revealed Marsh’s growing frustration and anger towards Jessica, culminating after she refused to finish lunch.

Police React to Verdict

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kimber, leading the investigation, said: “This is a tragic case where a young girl was robbed of her life before it even began. Marsh delayed medical help and lied about what happened. Our meticulous investigation, witness interviews, and detailed medical evidence secured justice. We hope today’s sentence offers Jessica’s family some closure as they mourn her loss.”
