Knife Attack Outside Mosque Lands Man 21 Years Behind Bars
Mohamed Shabaz, 19, from Manchester Road, Oldham, has been slammed with a 21-year prison sentence for a brutal knife attack in Sheffield last January.
Brutal Stabbing Shocks Local Community
On 30 January 2021, Shabaz waited outside Markazia Mosque in Darnall before launching a savage attack. He struck his 23-year-old victim from behind, stabbing him multiple times with a large kitchen knife. The victim was left with life-threatening injuries and rushed to hospital, where he fought for weeks to recover.
Chilling Details of Planned Attack
Detective Constable Leon Hobson from Sheffield CID revealed shocking details. “This was a premeditated, violent attack in broad daylight, just before prayer time, causing great shock in the community.”
Shabaz had driven from Oldham in a stolen car. After the stabbing, he fled the scene but CCTV captured him attempting to torch the stolen vehicle with petrol — though the fire never caught.
“Medical experts confirmed that without the intervention of members of the public, paramedics, and surgeons, the victim would have almost certainly died,” said DC Hobson.
Justice Served at Sheffield Crown Court
After intense CCTV and forensic investigations, Shabaz was arrested on 25 November 2021. He was charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in public.
Shabaz denied the charges throughout, but at Sheffield Crown Court today, the jury weren’t fooled. The judge slammed his testimony as “a confection of falsehoods.”
Found guilty on both counts, Shabaz was sentenced to 21 years behind bars — ensuring he can no longer endanger the public.
