West Yorkshire Police Warns Parents: Choose Kids’ Summer Clubs Carefully!

With summer holidays looming, West Yorkshire Police has joined forces with NWG and the Safe to Play campaign to make sure your kids are safe while having fun.

Don’t Get Caught Out by Dodgy Clubs

Not all sports clubs and activity providers are as legit as they appear. Some advertise themselves as child-friendly but have no links to official sports bodies or safeguarding schemes. This could put your child at risk.

Parents and carers must check if clubs are accredited by recognised sports governing bodies or national organisations. Accreditation means they have proper safeguarding policies to protect your youngsters.

Training for Safer Schools Officers

NWG is stepping up by training Safer Schools Officers across West Yorkshire this week. This will boost protection for kids in all five districts during school holidays and teacher training days.

Top Voices Back the Campaign

Chief Inspector Andrew Loftus, West Yorkshire Police: “Finding holiday childcare is tough. Kids deserve fun, safe activities free from harm or abuse. We’re working hard with partners to ensure every child has a positive experience in sport and extracurriculars in a safe environment. We’re proud to support NWG’s work helping parents keep children safe.”

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin: “Keeping children safe is our top priority. Summer holidays are full of great activities but parents and carers must follow this advice to ensure a safe, fun summer for all.”

Expert Advice from NWG

Kevin Murphy, NWG Network’s safeguarding in sport lead, urges parents to research clubs just like they would schools. “Treat clubs with the same scrutiny. Many do fantastic work in safeguarding—let’s see more. We want open dialogue between clubs and parents with children’s wellbeing front and centre.”

NWG offers advice on child exploitation issues at 123.
