French Police Launch Massive Hunt for Missing Toddler
French cops have kicked off a major search for Émile, a two-year-old boy who vanished over the weekend while on holiday with his grandparents. The tot disappeared from the garden of his grandparents’ home in Le Vernet, a tiny hamlet in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, on Saturday afternoon.
Moment of Inattention Sparks Panic
The family was getting ready to leave when little Émile slipped away unnoticed. His grandparents only realised he was missing when they went to put him in the car. They immediately dialled the police at around 5:15 pm, sparking a desperate manhunt.
Police, emergency crews, relatives, and locals quickly joined forces, scouring the area for the youngster. Despite their efforts, Émile remains missing.
Drone, Helicopters and Sniffer Dogs Join Search
Authorities have widened the search radius from 5 kilometres and deployed every resource at their disposal, including a helicopter, thermal drones, and sniffer dogs. Officials are combing the dense forests that surround Le Vernet — a hotspot for hikers but a tough terrain for searchers.
Émile was last seen wearing a yellow top, white shorts patterned with green, and hiking shoes. The blonde-haired, brown-eyed toddler stands just under 3ft tall (90cm). Police have ruled out abduction and are urging anyone with info to come forward immediately.
Locals and Officials Hope for Safe Return
François Balique, Le Vernet’s mayor, said the village has just 20 houses, making movements easy to spot. He described Émile as a good walker for his age and suggested the boy might have wandered far or hidden himself.
Experts say Émile’s age is a double-edged sword: he can’t travel too far unaided but may struggle with the rugged landscape. The community remains on high alert, praying for the tot’s safe return.
Authorities continue their tireless search and urge anyone who spots the boy to report it straight away. The countdown is on to bring little Émile home safe and sound.
