Trial Date Set for Man Accused of Killing PC Sharon Beshenivsky – 18 Years On
Nearly two decades after PC Sharon Beshenivsky was fatally shot in Bradford, a breakthrough has come. Piran Ditta Khan, 74, has been extradited from Pakistan and charged with her murder. His trial is slated to begin on February 12 at Sheffield Crown Court.
Plea Hearing Scheduled Before Trial
Khan appeared via video link but has yet to enter a plea. Ahead of the murder trial, he will face a plea hearing on October 6. Alongside the murder charge, Khan faces serious accusations including robbery, two counts of firearm possession with intent to endanger life, plus two counts of possessing prohibited weapons.
Tragic Death of a Rookie Officer
PC Sharon Beshenivsky was only nine months into her police career when she was gunned down responding to a burglary alarm at a travel agent on Morley Street, Bradford. The fatal shooting on November 18, 2005, also left her colleague PC Teresa Milburn badly injured but alive.
Old Convictions Didn’t Close the Case
Back in 2007, three men were jailed for Beshenivsky’s murder; two others were convicted of manslaughter and a sixth for robbery. Despite these convictions, police continued the probe. Their efforts paid off with Khan’s extradition and fresh charges, breathing new life into this chilling cold case.
