The undercliff walk is no longer safe beyond a certain point. The notch carving into the base of the cliff is growing, making the cliffs unstable and prone to collapse. Walkers are strongly advised to keep away from the cliff edge to avoid accidents.

What’s a Wave-Cut Notch?
It’s the destructive force where crashing waves hit the cliff’s base, causing damage that chips away at the rock. Here’s how it happens:
- Sea attacks the cliff base between high and low water marks.
- Wave-cut notch forms through abrasion and hydraulic action – basically, the waves dent the cliff at high tide level.
- The notch grows, making the cliff face unstable and prone to collapse.
- Backwash carries away debris, leaving a flat wave-cut platform behind.
- This cycle keeps repeating, causing the cliff line to retreat further inland.
