Suffolk Police Scoops Praise but Faces Tough Calls on Child Protection

HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) gave Suffolk Police a thumbs-up for its child protection work after a July 2022 inspection. The watchdog praised the force’s “committed and enthusiastic workforce” with a clear mission to make sure children’s voices are heard loud and clear.

Top Marks for Multi-Agency Teamwork

The force’s handling of urgent child protection cases impressed inspectors, especially their collaboration through the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH). HMICFRS highlighted how Suffolk Police works closely with partners to coordinate services and protect vulnerable kids.

But Warning Lights Flash on Exploited and Missing Children

However, the report also raised red flags. Suffolk Police must overhaul how it assesses and reacts to risks facing vulnerable youngsters—especially those missing from home, at risk of sexual or criminal exploitation, or targeted through online abuse.

Assistant Chief Constable Vows Action

Assistant Chief Constable Eamonn Bridger said: “We welcome the HMICFRS findings. Protecting children is our top priority and the inspection has helped sharpen our safeguarding efforts. We’re pleased the report recognises the strengths in our child protection work and the dedication of our staff.

“That said, we’re fully aware improvements are needed—particularly for missing and exploited children. Since the inspection, we’ve been making swift changes and will keep prioritising this vital work into 2023 and beyond. We’re committed to working with partners to boost our child protection arrangements even further.”
