Maureen Gitau Vanishes Without a Trace
Maureen Gitau, 24, was last seen leaving her home on Evelyn Street, SE8, on Monday, 5 December. Her family reported her missing five days later, on Saturday, 10 December. Despite public appeals, Maureen has not been seen or heard from since her disappearance.
Murder Investigation Launched
As fears for Maureen’s safety escalated, detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command stepped in. On Friday, 30 December, a 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder. The suspect remains in police custody, with enquiries revealing he knew Maureen.
Detective Speaks Out
“This arrest is a significant development in what is now being treated as a murder investigation,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn.
“While Maureen’s body has not been found, we have reason to believe she has come to serious harm and has likely been killed.
“Her family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. This news is a terrible shock. Our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.”
