UK Migrant Smuggling Gang Busted in Portsmouth
Two men from the Isle of Wight have been found guilty of plotting to sneak migrants into the UK. Stephen Redhead, 47, from Newport, and Christopher Barber, 55, from Shanklin, were convicted by a unanimous jury after a seven-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. They conspired to break UK immigration law by helping non-EU migrants enter the country illegally.
The Smuggling Operation Exposed
The court heard how, in March 2020, Redhead and Barber sailed a 70ft yacht called Anore to Cherbourg, France. They returned to East Cowes Marina with ten suspected migrants onboard. CCTV footage showed the migrants disembarking, leading Hampshire Constabulary to launch an investigation with support from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).
Jean Pierre Labelle, 45, from Ryde, had already pleaded guilty to the same offence in February. Labelle also attempted another smuggling run in June 2020 using a smaller boat named Freedom, which was intercepted by a combined operation involving SEROCU, the National Crime Agency, and French authorities. Six Albanian nationals without proper entry clearance were found onboard, along with two criminal associates later prosecuted in France.
SEROCU Cracks Down on People Smuggling
“Today’s convictions are the result of detailed investigation into people smuggling,” said Clair Trueman, Senior Investigating Officer at SEROCU. “We know the dangers migrants face crossing the Channel and the tragic consequences smuggling can bring. We remain committed to tackling those who exploit vulnerable people for profit, with no regard for their safety.”
Next Steps for the Convicted
Redhead is now in custody, while Barber has been bailed pending sentencing. Both men will appear at Isle of Wight Crown Court on 18th March for sentencing.
