Thug Jailed for Terrifying Attack on 82-Year-Old Woman

Martin McGinley, 30, from Crewe, has been locked up for 38 months after pleading guilty to a shocking burglary where he terrorised an elderly woman at her home.

False Pretence to Break In

On September 13, 2022, the 82-year-old was sitting quietly in her Wistaston home when McGinley knocked on her door. He asked for the owner, who wasn’t home, and claimed his name was ‘Martin’. After leaving, he came back half an hour later saying he had permission to borrow a spanner.

But once inside, McGinley slammed the door shut and forced the pensioner towards her bedroom. He pressed a pillow over her face and muffled her cries for help by covering her mouth.

Robbery and Threats

While restraining the terrified woman, McGinley ransacked drawers and the wardrobe, stuffing stolen goods into a Nike rucksack he carried. He warned her not to call the police, promising he wouldn’t hurt her, before making his escape.

The victim quickly contacted the homeowner, who reported the crime to police. CCTV captured McGinley entering and leaving the property, providing crucial evidence.

Swift Police Action and Sentence

Officers raided McGinley’s home early the next day, arresting him and seizing the clothes and rucksack seen on CCTV. He was charged with burglary and later appeared at Chester Crown Court.

Along with his jail time, McGinley received a restraining order against the victims and must pay a £228 surcharge.

Detective Constable Vicki Greenhoff said, “The elderly victim was left extremely distressed following the ordeal she had to endure at the hands of McGinley. He showed no remorse and was only thinking of his own selfish gain. I welcome the sentence and hope the victim can start to move on. We will continue to target burglars like him relentlessly.”
