Brutal Murderer Jordan McSweeney Locked Up for Life
Jordan McSweeney, 29, with no fixed address, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 14 December. He had pleaded guilty to the murder and sexual assault of Zara on 18 November.
Zara’s Horrific Attack on Ilford Street
In the early hours of Sunday, 26 June, Zara was walking home along Cranbrook Road, Ilford, when McSweeney snuck up behind her. He dragged her into a driveway and launched a savage attack, raining down multiple blows that left her gravely injured.
Neighbours and passers-by rushed to help, with one even performing CPR before paramedics arrived. Despite frantic efforts, Zara, just 35, tragically died later that morning.
Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute
“Today’s sentencing protects the public from a man who cannot and must not live freely in the world,” said Zara’s aunt, Farah Naz.
“His extreme indifference to Zara’s life and the law makes him dangerously unpredictable. We have some retribution, but no peace.
“Zara was the light, the warmth, the laughter in our family. Her brutal death leaves us shattered every day.
“We are deeply touched by the kindness from so many – a true testament to Zara’s powerful spirit.”
How CCTV Led Police to McSweeney
McSweeney spent the night of 25 June heavily drinking in an Ilford bar before being kicked out around 11pm. CCTV footage showed him roaming drunk through Ilford and nearby Manor Park, trailing lone women, with one even seen running to escape him.
He stalked Zara for 10 minutes before attacking her near Cranbrook Rise.
After the attack, CCTV tracked McSweeney calmly walking away, hopping a fence into Valentines Park, where he was staying at a fairground.
The next afternoon officers swooped, arresting him at 2:40pm on suspicion of murder and rape.
Further footage showed him discarding his vest and bag—the latter containing his shoes and other items worn during the attack—at the site.
Charged and Convicted
On 29 June, McSweeney was officially charged with murder, rape, and robbery—the robbery charge related to stealing Zara’s belongings, many found discarded along his escape route.
When he pleaded guilty, charges shifted to murder and sexual assault. He admitted the murder was sexually motivated.
McSweeney’s sentence ensures he will never harm anyone again.
