Rebecca Ikumelo Dies After Brixton Academy Stampede
Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, from Newham, east London, died on Saturday morning following a terrifying crowd crush at the Brixton O2 Academy. The incident happened during a Thursday night gig by Afrobeat sensation Asake. Two more women—aged 21 and 23—remain critically ill in hospital.
Eight people were rushed to hospital after chaos erupted when a large group reportedly tried to force entry to the venue. Police say Asake had to cut his performance short after just three songs as panic broke out.
Asake Speaks Out: “Devastated by the News”
The Nigerian star, real name Ahmed Ololade, expressed heartbreak over the tragedy. On Instagram, he wrote:
“My heart is with those who were injured. I am devastated by the news and have spoken with Rebecca’s family. I could never have imagined this happening.”
He added that he and his team are awaiting a full report from venue management and police to uncover how the disruption led to Rebecca’s death. He urged anyone with information to contact the Metropolitan Police.
Police Launch Urgent Investigation Into Crowd Crush
The Met is rigorously probing the incident, examining vast amounts of footage from social media and body-worn cameras. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove assured the public:
“Our investigation is painstaking and forensic. We are determined to establish exactly what happened. Rebecca’s family and all affected remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
MP Demands Answers on Security Failures
Labour MP Florence Eshalomi slammed the venue’s handling of the event. She said:
“It’s clear ticketing and security did not perform as they should have for this to happen. We need answers and urgent preventative measures.”
She visited Brixton Academy on Saturday and called the incident “deeply concerning”—turning what should have been a celebration into a “very sad day.”
The incident is also under review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
