Lifeboat Legend Denis Honoured After 55 Years of Heroism
Denis has been a lifeboat lifer since 1967, starting out as a shore helper. Over more than five decades, he worked his way up through every role imaginable. From D Class crew and helm, to emergency mechanic, second coxswain, and then coxswain of the Rother Class lifeboat Hampshire Rose until 1980.
His career didn’t stop there. Denis also served as Atlantic senior helm, Deputy Launch Authority, and has been Lifeboat Operations Manager since 2001.
Record-Breaking Service at Walmer Lifeboat Station
In his 55 years, Dennis and Walmer’s lifeboat crew have launched an incredible 1,257 times, rescued 1,429 people, and saved 313 lives. The numbers show the true grit and dedication behind this exceptional maritime hero.
Denis Speaks Out: “Humbled and Surprised” by Award
“As you can imagine, this is a great shock and very unexpected. I am both very moved, humbled and surprised that the RNLI has considered me worthy of such an honour. All I have ever done is to try and do my best for Walmer lifeboat and the Institution. To see the station thrive and everyone there develop in their roles has been a reward in itself for me. However, I am extremely grateful to the people who put me forward to be considered for this award and those who put together the evidence for the citation. It is a true honour to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Walmer Lifeboat Station both past and present.”
