The Victim Based Crime Team (VBCT) has slammed a series of shocking offences in Maidstone, cracking down on repeat offenders and protecting local communities.
Shoplifting Sparks Violence and Abuse
One standout case involves Dave O’Connell, 34, from Chatham. He’s accused of stealing alcohol from a Co-op in Loose Road last November. But it doesn’t stop there. O’Connell reportedly punched a shop employee in the face and hurled racial slurs at him.
He now faces charges including racially aggravated assault, public order offences, and shoplifting. O’Connell is due in Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on February 27, 2023.
Child’s Phone Stolen During Football Game
John Vidler, 31, and Alice Collins, 29, stand accused of pinching a child’s phone last December. The youngster was playing football in a Marden recreational area when the theft is alleged to have happened. Both are set to appear in court on March 1, 2023.
Homophobic Assault Rocks Maidstone Night Out
VBCT is also tackling hate crime head-on. Two men were violently attacked and subjected to homophobic abuse while heading home in the early hours of July 22, 2022.
Ben Marshall, 23, from East Malling, and an accomplice from Scotland have been charged with assault and hate-related offences. They face Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on March 17, 2023.
Strong Message from Police Chief
Chief Inspector Mark McLellan said: “Maidstone is generally a safe place to live and visit, but like any town, issues arise – often from repeat offenders.
“We are focused on tackling shoplifting, petty theft, and street disorder to build trust in our communities. Retail workers should never have to face abuse or threats, and nobody should fear for their safety after a night out.”
