Roads Policing Unit Cracks Down on Dangerous Drivers Every Wednesday
Every Wednesday, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) unleashes a blitz in a county town as part of Project Zero, a mission to slash road casualties. This weekly crackdown targets Britain’s deadly ‘fatal five’ driving offences.
Targeting the Fatal Five: Speed, Drink, Phones and More
Project Zero zeroes in on excess speed, drink or drug driving, using a phone behind the wheel, skipping seatbelts, and careless or dangerous driving. The RPU ramps up resources to make roads safer for everyone.
February 8: 40 Drivers Nabbed, 24 Fines Issued
- Officers stopped 40 drivers for offences including 16 serious breaches like speeding, illegal window tints, phone use, and careless driving.
- 24 fixed penalties slapped on drivers and passengers mostly for not wearing seatbelts, expired MOTs, and dodgy number plates.
- A 39-year-old Westbury woman was arrested in Portway suspected of drug driving. She’s been released on bail while investigations continue.
- Police also rushed to a three-vehicle crash on the A303.
Hard-Hitting Message from A/Insp Will Ayres
“We visited spots where locals complained about speeding, like the A350 at Longbridge Deverill, to deter offenders and reassure communities. Speeding, or even the fear of it, hurts small towns, so we hope our presence helped,” said A/Insp Will Ayres.
“We were stunned by how many drivers weren’t wearing seatbelts. It only takes seconds to buckle up, but that tiny act can be the difference between life and death in serious crashes.”
