Tax Credit Claimants Face Universal Credit Move from April
The Government is stepping up efforts to shift more Tax Credit claimants over to Universal Credit. This move aims to simplify the benefits system by moving legacy benefit claimants to a modern, streamlined scheme.
Letters Sent to Boost Action
- From April, more Tax Credit recipients will be required to switch to Universal Credit.
- Affected claimants will get official 1 outlining what they must do next.
- Claimants will still receive their full entitled benefits through a more flexible, up-to-date digital system.
Universal Credit: A Modern Safety Net
With help from the Department for Work and Pensions, claimants moving to Universal Credit will benefit from a system designed for today’s needs. Universal Credit supports millions annually, allowing users to access and adjust their claims easily online whenever their circumstances change.
Generally, claimants will be better off after the switch. Where Universal Credit payments might be lower than previous benefits, a top-up called Transitional Protection ensures no one loses out at migration.
Government Pushes Ahead Despite Pandemic Pause
“Universal Credit has proven itself as a benefits system fit for the modern age, having dealt with the unprecedented demand of 3.7 million claims during the pandemic,” said Minister for Employment, Guy Opperman MP.
“The movement of those on legacy benefits to Universal Credit will ensure we can continue to provide the best level of support to benefit recipients through an effective and streamlined system.”
“This Government remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable in society. I want to encourage all those who receive their migration notices to take action to ensure that they continue to receive the benefits they are entitled to.”
The Government paused forcing legacy claimants onto Universal Credit during the pandemic to handle the surge in claims. However, as demand eases, they’re now ramping up the migration, starting with Tax Credit recipients. Those who ignore their Migration Notices risk losing vital benefits.
