Warning: MoJ Phone Scam Hits the UK
The Ministry of Justice has issued a stark warning about a slick phone scam tricking the public. Fraudsters are posing as MoJ or HM Courts & Tribunals Service staff, trying to squeeze money by threatening fines or court actions.
How the Scam Works
Con artists ring victims from a number spoofing the Ministry of Justice – 0203 334 3555. They claim you face a bigger fine or court case and demand payment over the phone. Some even push you to check GOV.UK to verify the number, making the scam seem legit.
Protect Yourself Now
- The MoJ and HMCTS will NEVER ask for your bank or card details or ask for payment by phone.
- Always pause before handing over money or personal info — it could save you from fraud.
- Remember, it’s totally fine to hang up, refuse, or ignore suspicious calls.
- Only scammers rush or panic you to pay immediately.
What To Do If You’re Targeted
- Got a dodgy text? Forward it for free to 7726 to report.
- Report suspicious calls at Action Fraud.
- If you’ve sent money or been scammed, call 0300 123 2040 or report online to Action Fraud.
- Not sure? Dial 159 to check suspicious calls.
Stay sharp. Don’t let scammers win.
