New Class 196 Train Named “Sir Edward Elgar” Takes Centre Stage at Worcester
The sleek new train dubbed “Sir Edward Elgar” was officially named in a ceremony at Worcester Shrub Hill station this morning. It’s one of 26 shiny Class 196 trains rolled out by West Midlands Railway (WMR) as part of a massive £690 million upgrade to their fleet and infrastructure.
Ready to Roll Across Hereford to Birmingham Route
The first of these cutting-edge trains started running between Birmingham and Shrewsbury back in October. After extensive testing and driver training, they’re set to carry passengers from Hereford, Worcester, and Bromsgrove to Birmingham starting next month.
Ian McConnell, WMR managing director, said:
“I’m thrilled that people in Hereford and Worcester will soon enjoy these brand new trains. They offer smart air conditioning that adjusts to conditions and power points at every seat for a modern travel experience.”
“Naming one of the trains after such an iconic local figure shows how much we value our communities.”
Local Leaders Praise the Upgrade
Tom Painter, executive director of West Midlands Rail Executive, said:
“As a local and regular traveller on this route, I’m delighted by these modern trains. They bring a journey experience worthy of this beautiful, historic area.”
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, added:
“It’s fantastic that more customers will soon benefit from trains that are fit for the future and support our region’s growth plans.”
Honouring a Local Legend: Sir Edward Elgar
Sir Edward Elgar, the legendary composer famed for the Pomp and Circumstance Marches and Enigma Variations, was born near Worcester in 1857. The train’s name was unveiled by the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Andrew Manning-Cox, in front of invited guests including passenger groups.
Later this year, the Class 196 fleet will also launch on the Leamington to Nuneaton route, connecting Coventry, Kenilworth, and Bedworth.
