The BBC Proms 2023 season wrapped up on a high note with smashing success across the UK and beyond. Classical music lovers tuned in in record numbers both online and in person, smashing previous attendance and viewing figures.
Digital Craze Sees Proms Viewership Soar
The Proms went digital and how! Online engagement more than doubled from last year, with signed-in accounts streaming content on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds hitting an all-time high. TV audiences matched the buzz — nearly 1 million viewers watched the First Night on BBC Two, the biggest audience since 2009.
Overall Proms TV audiences soared to 3.2 million for the opening night and peaked at 3.5 million for the iconic Last Night of the Proms on BBC One. The nation’s love for classical music remains rock solid.
Royal Albert Hall Sells Out and Welcomes Newcomers
The legendary Royal Albert Hall rocked with over half of main evening concerts completely sold out. Average attendance climbed to a remarkable 93%, blowing past the 85% pre-pandemic figure from 2019.
Nearly half of Royal Albert Hall audiences were first-time Proms attendees, proving classical music’s magnetic pull continues to grow.
Star-Studded Line-Up and Fresh Digital Push
Highlights included Sir Simon Rattle’s final concerts as LSO Music Director, a full staging of Berlioz’s operatic masterpiece The Trojans, and lively celebrations of Northern Soul and Bollywood. Fame was added by stars like Rufus Wainwright, Jon Hopkins, and Portugal’s Mariza in the inaugural Fado Prom.
The Proms also nailed modern engagement by partnering with TikTok, refreshing their classical hashtag and scoring over 1 million views — mainly from 18 to 34-year-olds. Across BBC social, Proms content racked up an eye-popping 5 million views.
BBC Execs Praise Proms’ Broader Appeal
“This has been a fantastic year for the Proms, showing Britain’s hunger for classical music,” said Sam Jackson, Controller of BBC Radio 3. “Audiences are now higher than before the pandemic. I’m thrilled to see so many young people coming to classical concerts for the first time.”
