Sussex Police have provided an update on the investigation into the discovery of a tent and travel cot in Queens Park, Brighton, indicating that the couple with a toddler, initially thought to be sleeping in the park, may not have been staying there overnight. The update comes after a member of the public raised concerns last Thursday about a young woman potentially sleeping in the park with a child and a male companion.
The man was described as being in his late teens to early 20s, and the child was estimated to be about 18 months old. The initial report had prompted concerns about the well-being of the group, particularly given the young child’s involvement.
Sussex Police have now stated, “Further information has come to light that suggests the family were frequenting the site in Queens Park and may not have been sleeping there overnight. However, we are continuing with our efforts to locate the group to ensure they are safe and well.”
Detective Superintendent Kris Ottery described the report as “very concerning” and emphasized that the force has treated the matter with “incredible seriousness and utmost importance.” He directly appealed to the man and woman in question to make contact with the police to confirm their safety.
Over the weekend, teams of officers conducted extensive searches throughout the city, aided by drones and the National Police Air Service helicopter. The community has been actively involved in the search efforts, with many local residents aiding the police.
Det Supt Ottery further stated, “Safeguarding is at the heart of our investigation, and we have worked closely with our partner agencies to ensure the search reaches the rest of the UK.” The Sussex Police have sought support from the National Crime Agency, other police forces, and homeless outreach services to identify and locate the couple and the toddler.
