A “stray firework” is believed to have ignited a fire on New Year’s Eve that engulfed a shed and a garage, causing significant damage in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex. Firefighters were called to Leeward Road just 12 minutes into the new year after receiving reports of a fire, marking a dramatic start to the year for residents.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of bushes on fire on Leeward Road at 12:12 am. Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered that the flames had spread to two outbuildings, including a shed measuring approximately 5 meters by 5 meters and a garage measuring approximately 5 meters by 10 meters.

Crews from Basildon, Wickford, and Rayleigh Weir swiftly mobilized to combat the blaze and prevent it from further spreading. Despite the challenging situation, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire by 1:29 am and remained at the scene until 3:10 am to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.
The incident was a particularly busy one for the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service control team, who fielded over 50 emergency calls in just three hours, between 11 pm and 2 am.
Authorities believe that the fire was initiated by a stray firework, adding to the growing concerns surrounding the use of non-silent fireworks in residential areas.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with fireworks, especially when they are not handled or used responsibly. Fire safety experts advise individuals to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when using fireworks, particularly in densely populated areas.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the stray fireworks that triggered this blaze, local authorities are urging residents to prioritize safety and be vigilant when dealing with fireworks in the future.
