Explosive Heist Duo Jailed After Stealing £160,000 in Armed Raids

Driving stolen cars, two men launched terrifying raids on businesses armed with weapons. They threatened staff before planting explosive devices to break into cash machines.
Between April and July 2023, the pair hit four commercial sites—three in Greater Manchester and one in Staffordshire. Their crime spree netted nearly £160,000 and left tens of thousands in damages.
Jet-Setting Criminals Caught After Airport Escape
After the heists, the crooks were spotted passing Manchester Airport, fleeing to Malaga, Egypt, and Mexico. Their spree came to a crashing halt on 19 September when police caught up with them. They abandoned a rucksack containing high-vis vests, gloves, a screwdriver, tape, and a smoke flare.
Ben Thompson was arrested at a supermarket forecourt in Hulme, while Wesley Shepherd was nabbed at his mum’s house in Northenden.
Long Sentences for Ruthless Robbery and Explosions
On 29 January 2024, Thompson, 36, from Wythenshawe, was jailed for 20 years. Shepherd, 40, from Sale, got 18 years and eight months. Both admitted conspiracy to commit robbery and causing explosions likely to endanger life and property.
Police Praise Teamwork in Bringing Duo to Justice
“These men had no regard for public safety to make a quick buck. Their reckless attacks cause huge harm,” said Detective Sergeant Rich McCorry, GMP Serious Organised Crime Group.
“Thanks to a thorough investigation with colleagues across Greater Manchester and Staffordshire, we linked the crimes and put two dangerous men behind bars for a long time.”
