Operation Brock was reintroduced to manage delays at the Port of Dover
Traffic chaos is anticipated for travellers heading to Dover this Easter weekend as National Highways reinstates Operation Brock. The traffic management initiative was reintroduced on the M20 last week in anticipation of the upcoming holiday period, aiming to alleviate congestion and ensure traffic flow amidst anticipated delays at the Port of Dover.
The decision to reinstate Operation Brock follows Britain’s exit from the European Union, leading to heightened border checks for individuals travelling to France. A spokesperson for National Highways emphasized the necessity of Operation Brock, stating, “Operation Brock is part of a series of measures to improve Kent’s resilience and ensure the smooth flow of traffic through the region in the event of disruption to services across the English Channel.
With Operation Brock back in effect, all Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) traffic bound for the Port of Dover or the Eurotunnel is required to follow signage and join the contraflow system at Junction 8 of the M20, leading to Leeds Castle and Maidstone Services. Any EU-bound HGVs deviating from the contraflow system and attempting to access the Port of Dover or the Eurotunnel via alternative routes risk facing a £300 fine.
Furthermore, the coast-bound traffic, including local freight and vehicles travelling to Europe, must adhere to signage and transition to the contraflow on the M20’s London-bound carriageway. All vehicles within the contraflow are subject to a reduced speed limit of 50mph.
National Highways has also closed the Junction 8 coast-bound slip road to all traffic. travellers planning to utilize the Eurotunnel or the port are advised to plan their journeys, allowing for extra travel time and ensuring readiness for potential delays. Simple vehicle checks, such as ensuring adequate fuel and carrying essential supplies like warm clothing and provisions, are recommended to mitigate breakdowns and ensure a safer journey.
The reinstatement of Operation Brock underscores the proactive measures undertaken to manage holiday traffic and maintain the efficiency of transportation routes, especially during peak travel periods.
