Eurovision fans were left cringing after Switzerland’s Nemo Mettler, this year’s Eurovision winner, seemingly committed a faux pas just moments after being crowned the champion.
The atmosphere at the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmo, Sweden, was charged with excitement and anticipation as the 25 music acts performed. However, the crowning moment turned awkward when Nemo Mettler emerged victorious with his song ‘The Code,’ performed while balancing on a tipping metal disc.
Amid the celebrations, Nemo took an encore, waving the glass microphone, symbolizing the Eurovision trophy, at the cameras. But as Nemo attempted to stand up, using the trophy for support, viewers witnessed an unexpected turn of events—the trophy broke.
The mishap occurred just moments after TV presenter Graham Norton jokingly warned, “Don’t break the trophy.
Fans quickly took to social media to react to the awkward moment, with many finding humour in the situation. One user tweeted, “When @GrahamNorton_01 tells you not to break the #eurovision trophy – AND THEN YOU DO!!!”
Another user remarked, “Graham saying ‘don’t break the trophy’ followed by the clink of Eurovision 2024 winner Nemo smashing the trophy is iconic.”
Adding a humorous twist, many fans referenced Nemo’s song lyrics, stating, “Not only did Nemo break the code but also their thumb and Eurovision trophy.”
Despite the unexpected turn of events, Nemo addressed the incident at the Eurovision press conference, confirming the mishap and expressing a mix of emotions about the overall experience.
“This whole experience was intense, and not just pleasant all the way,” Nemo said. And I hope that Eurovision continues and can continue to stand for peace and love in the future.
While the Eurovision trophy may have suffered a slight setback, the spirit of unity and celebration at the contest remained undiminished.
