Following a rigorous misconduct hearing, PC Gary Stevens, a member of the Specialist Operations unit, has been found to have violated professional standards related to honesty, integrity, and responsibilities.
The hearing, which concluded on Friday, May 10, revealed several lapses in PC Stevens’ conduct during a stop and search operation conducted on April 13, 2022. The specific findings include:
- Improper Handling of Seized Cannabis: PC Stevens failed to adequately secure, store, and retain cannabis confiscated during the stop and search.
- Incomplete Documentation: The officer neglected to properly complete the stop and search form and update relevant Met Police Officer Charged with Assault Following Wrongful Arrest in Croydon" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-wpil-monitor-id="14391">Metropolitan Police crime recording databases.
- Unauthorised Alterations: In connection with the same incident, PC Stevens accessed records and altered references related to the search. He falsely indicated that cannabis was found and resolved through community measures.
Chief Superintendent Kris Wright, head of Specialist Operations, underscored the critical importance of trust in policing. “As police officers, we are subject to intense scrutiny regarding our use of stop and search,” said Wright. “Trust is non-negotiable, and without it, effective policing cannot occur.”
Wright acknowledged the potential impact of PC Stevens’ dishonesty on public trust. “We are committed to rebuilding trust with communities in our stop and search practices and broader policing efforts,” he added.
As a consequence of his actions, PC Stevens will be added to the Barred List maintained by the College of Policing. Individuals on this list are ineligible for employment by police forces, local policing bodies (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
