Biden’s Stirring D-Day Speech: A Rallying Cry for Freedom

At a moving ceremony marking 80 years since the D-Day landings, US President Joe Biden delivered a fiery call to arms in defence of democracy. Standing alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and WWII veterans at Normandy’s American Cemetery, Biden urged Western powers to back Ukraine against Russian aggression.

He warned against isolationism, saying: “Isolationism was not the answer 80 years ago and is not the answer today.” Biden stressed that giving in to Russian tyranny is “simply unthinkable” and vowed unwavering US support for Ukraine. He called for Western and NATO allies to rekindle the unity seen on D-Day.

Honouring Heroes Who Stormed the Beaches

On June 6, 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy—Omaha, Juno, Sword, Utah, and Gold—to free France from Nazi rule. With many veterans now centenarians, this poignant anniversary might be one of the last with their presence.

“The men who fought here became heroes. They knew beyond any doubt there are things worth fighting and dying for,” Biden said, saluting the veterans with a heartfelt, “God love ya.”

West Must Stand Firm Amid New Threats

This D-Day anniversary resonates deeply amid the brutal war raging in Ukraine. The gathering coincided with crucial elections in Europe and the US, raising concerns about future support for Ukraine—especially with former President Donald Trump, who may scale back aid, potentially Biden’s opponent this November.

Across the Channel in Ver-sur-Mer, King Charles echoed Biden’s message, reminding all in fluent French and English: “Free nations must stand together to oppose tyranny.”

World Leaders Unite as Russia Stands Excluded

The ceremony also featured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and other dignitaries. Russia was notably absent, barred due to its 2022 invasion of Ukraine—the biggest European conflict since WWII.

On Utah Beach, enthusiasts dressed in replica WWII uniforms marched solemnly, honouring the sacrifices made for freedom and highlighting the ongoing battle to defend democratic values.
