In a recent statement to reporters, Clenshaw hinted at a series of surprises lined up for the soap’s ‘ruby celebrations’. “As we head towards our 40th year, I think the nostalgic element means a lot,” he said. “Into the autumn and the end of the year, we’ve got quite a few treats coming up.”
When pressed by The Sun about the potential return of long-gone characters, Clenshaw remained coy but hopeful. “Maybe. It all depends on the story and where the characters are. But it has to come from character, it has to come from story,” he explained.
EastEnders fans have already begun speculating on social media, deciphering possible clues left in recent episodes about which beloved characters might be returning. Clenshaw added to the intrigue by suggesting that hints may indeed be scattered throughout the script. “It would depend on when they’re looking back from, but probably,” he said. “The 40th has been in the works for quite some time and Christmas is well underway. In the story office, there is a board and it all connects. I compare it to a tapestry board; everything has to fit together.”
This announcement follows a trend of returning characters that have delighted fans in recent years. Notably, last year saw the dramatic comeback of Cindy, portrayed by Michelle Collins, who was revealed to be living in France with Ian, played by Adam Woodyatt, despite being presumed dead. Additionally, several former cast members made appearances at Dot Cotton’s funeral in 2022, including Jacqueline Jossa.
