A murder investigation has been launched following the death of an inmate who was stabbed at HMP Dovegate, a prison housing criminals from Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas.
The incident occurred shortly after 9 AM on Saturday, July 13. Police were dispatched to HMP Dovegate near Uttoxeter after receiving reports of an attack on a prisoner. The victim, a 42-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
Staffordshire Police have confirmed the arrest of a 46-year-old inmate on suspicion of murder. He has been released on bail as we continue to investigate,” said a police spokesman. Specially-trained officers are continuing to support the man’s family at this difficult time.
HMP Dovegate, a Serco-run jail, is a Category B facility with a population of 1,060 male inmates over the age of 21. A Serco spokesman told StokeonTrentLive, “We can confirm the death of a 42-year-old man at HMP Dovegate. The matter is now being investigated by the police.”
