Beware! Police Scam Calls Hit Chesterfield and Derbyshire

Residents in Chesterfield, Derby, and Ripley are being warned to stay sharp. Scammers are posing as police officers, targeting unsuspecting locals with fake fraud alerts.

Scam Alert: Fake Police Calls Demand Cash and Details

Several people have reported suspicious calls from individuals claiming to be police officers. These scammers allege fraudulent activity on bank accounts and push victims to hand over personal info, bank cards, or cash — often via courier. Luckily, those targeted have so far refused to hand over any details and reported the calls immediately.

PC Louise Rodger, fraud protection officer, urges: “Please share this message with your friends and family, especially older or vulnerable relatives. Talk to them about our crime prevention advice – Stop! Think! Tell! By remembering to do this, they can protect themselves against scams.”

Derbyshire’s “Sock it to the Scammers” Campaign

To crack down on these con artists, Derbyshire Constabulary launched the bright pink sock puppet campaign featuring Claude. The light-hearted mascot teaches people how to spot and avoid scams.

Top Tips to Dodge Police Impersonation Scams

  1. Police officers NEVER:
    • Call unexpectedly asking for cash, personal information, or bank details.
    • Request you transfer money, hand over bank cards or cash to couriers, or pay fines over the phone—if they do, it’s a scam!
  2. Meeting in person? Genuine officers will always show their warrant card.
  3. Verify suspicious calls:
    • If unsure, hang up and call 101 to check. Wait five minutes before calling, ensuring a dial tone—scammers may keep the line open to trick you.
  4. More info: Visit Derbyshire Police’s website to learn how to verify an officer’s identity.
