Brutal abuser jailed for 17 years after 10-day torture ordeal in Lambeth
Horror captivity in Tulse Hill
Nam Nguyen, 27, was locked in a flat in Tulse Hill in September 2023, where he held a woman captive for 10 terrifying days. During this time, he brutally abused her physically, emotionally, and sexually, controlling every aspect of her life.
Escape from nightmare
The victim suffered repeated assaults, rape, and serious injuries, including a spinal fracture. Nguyen also controlled her finances and trapped her inside the flat. Desperate, the woman made a daring escape by jumping from a window and fleeing to a nearby care home. Staff there found her battered and immediately alerted the police.
Swift justice after chilling crimes
Nguyen was caught shortly after the victim fled. Forensic and CCTV evidence tied him unmistakably to the abuse. The victim’s detailed testimony led to his conviction on multiple counts, including false imprisonment, coercive control, wounding with intent, threats to kill, grievous bodily harm, rape, and sexual assault. He was acquitted on just one charge of administering a noxious substance.
Harsh sentence for a heinous act
On Friday, August 16, 2024, Nguyen, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court to 17 years behind bars, plus a four-year extended sentence. He must serve two-thirds of his term before being considered for parole and will be on lifelong notification requirements.
Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, Lambeth and Southwark policing commander, said: “It’s hard to imagine the pain and suffering this woman went through, and I am pleased the man responsible for these awful crimes has been brought to justice. This has been an incredibly complex investigation, and I hope this outcome demonstrates how the Met is committed to tackling violence against women and girls.”
