An eight-year-old boy has tragically died after sustaining “serious” injuries to his head and face in an incident involving a firearm at a farm in Cumbria. The incident, which took place on 28 September at a property in the Warcop area, led to the swift arrival of emergency services.
In a statement, Cumbria Police said: “Police are investigating following the death of an eight-year-old boy.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2:50 pm after receiving reports of a child being seriously injured by a firearm. North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) attended the farm, along with police officers, and the firearm was secured at the scene.
The boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance after suffering life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by medical staff, he sadly passed away overnight.
A man in his 60s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH). The man remains in police custody but has now been re-arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. No further details about the relationship between the suspect and the child have been released at this stage.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist with their inquiries.
