Chancellor Rachel Reeves Unveils Bold Plan to Supercharge UK Finance

In her debut Mansion House speech tonight, Chancellor Rachel Reeves promises a shake-up to turbocharge growth and competitiveness in Britain’s financial services sector.

Reeves admits recent regulations have gone too far, choking risk-taking and stalling economic growth. “The UK has been regulating for risk, but not regulating for growth,” she says. “While it was right that successive governments toughened rules after the Global Financial Crisis, it’s time to learn lessons and rebalance.”

New Growth-Focused Rules and Pension ‘Mega Funds’ on the Way

The Chancellor will unveil radical reforms, including:

  • Setting fresh growth-oriented targets for financial regulators
  • Publishing the first-ever Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy
  • Creating pension “mega funds” to unlock big investment in businesses, infrastructure, and clean energy

She’ll also announce changes to the Financial Ombudsman Service, tighten the Certification Regime, and crack down harder on financial fraud.

UK’s Global Financial Clout Under Threat – Time to Step Up

Reeves warns the UK’s standing as a global financial powerhouse “cannot be taken for granted.” Competition is fierce, and only through bold reform can Britain keep its edge. Her strategy centres on five high-growth areas:

  • FinTech
  • Sustainable finance
  • Asset management
  • Insurance and reinsurance
  • Capital markets

She also pledges stronger international partnerships with other major financial hubs.

Driving Sustainable Finance with New Rules and Investments

On the green finance front, the Treasury will:

  • Introduce draft laws regulating ESG rating providers
  • Consult on a UK Taxonomy to classify sustainable investments
  • Launch principles for voluntary carbon and nature markets

These moves aim to secure the UK’s position as a global leader in sustainable finance.

“The changes I have set out today will drive growth and competitiveness through investment and reform. This represents the most pro-growth financial services package since the financial crisis.” – Chancellor Rachel Reeves
