Water Crisis Hits Crystal Palace and Sydenham – Supplies Slowly Coming Back

After four agonising days without water, residents of Crystal Palace, Sydenham, and nearby areas are finally seeing supplies creep back to normal. Thames Water confirmed the disruption started on the evening of Tuesday, February 11, 2025, following a major burst water pipe in Dulwich.

Water Slowly Returns but Problems Remain

Thames Water says repairs are done and water pressure is gradually normalising. But don’t pop the champagne just yet – some customers are still facing:

  • Low water pressure, especially in taller buildings
  • Intermittent water cuts during peak hours
  • Cloudy or bubbly water caused by trapped air (safe to drink, Thames assures)

For those still dry, bottled water stations have been set up at Sainsbury’s Southend Lane (SE26 4PU), open until 9 PM daily.

Residents Fuming Over Four-Day Water Blackout

The outage hit areas including SE19, SE20, SE23, SE26, SE27, and SW16. It disrupted homes, seven schools, and three care homes, forcing emergency water measures for vulnerable folks.

“It’s annoying. The water has been going on and off for three days. The pressure is low, and sometimes it just stops completely,” said Sydenham local Anna Kakule, 27.

Many residents had to travel miles for bottled water, fuming at the lack of communication from Thames Water.

Thames Water Apologises Amid Backlash

A Thames Water spokesperson said:

“We’re sorry to customers in the Crystal Palace area who have had no water or lower pressure than usual due to a burst pipe.

We have completed repairs and water supplies will return to normal as pressures build.

To ease the impact, we diverted water from other areas to restore most customers. However, some may still face temporary supply loss during peak demand.”

Calls for Compensation Grow as Frustration Mounts

Despite fixes, many South Londoners remain furious. Some demand compensation for the ordeal, angry Thames Water wants to hike bills amid the chaos.

“We’ve been without water for over four days, yet they still want to raise our bills. It’s ridiculous,” one resident blasted.

What’s Next?

Thames Water vows to keep a close eye on the situation and respond quickly to any fresh issues. Residents are encouraged to run taps if water looks cloudy; it should clear as supply stabilises.
