Wiltshire Police, in partnership with HMRC and Trading Standards, have seized more than £31,000 worth of illicit tobacco in Broadgreen, Swindon, following a multi-agency operation.
Major Seizure in Broadgreen
The operation, conducted on March 4, was part of ‘Brighter Broadgreen’, an ongoing initiative aimed at tackling crime in the area. A specialist drugs dog helped officers uncover illegal tobacco hidden in two parked cars, which were subsequently seized and towed away.
In addition to the vehicle searches, officers visited two stores, one on Manchester Road and another on Fleet Street, leading to the seizure of illicit vapes worth approximately £2,000.
Links to Organised Crime
Sergeant Winter of the Swindon Central South NPT stressed the wider impact of illicit tobacco sales, stating:
“The sale of illicit tobacco puts money in the pockets of organised criminals. These are often linked to the exploitation of children, people trafficking, modern slavery, and illegal working, causing significant harm.”
He urged residents to think twice before purchasing illegal tobacco, warning that such actions indirectly fund criminal networks operating in local communities.
Health and Safety Risks
Councillor Jim Grant, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, highlighted the public health risks associated with counterfeit tobacco:
“Illegal tobacco is not regulated or manufactured to the same standards as normal tobacco. It often contains higher levels of harmful substances, as well as banned chemicals.”
He praised the joint operation, calling it a “huge success” in protecting both public health and the safety of Swindon’s residents.
