Major Tobacco Bust in Swindon Nets £31,000 of Illegal Goods
Big Win for Broadgreen Crime Crackdown
Wiltshire Police, teamed with HMRC and Trading Standards, swooped on Broadgreen, Swindon, seizing over £31,000 worth of dodgy tobacco in a major crackdown. The multi-agency raid on March 4 was part of the ongoing ‘Brighter Broadgreen’ initiative targeting crime hot spots.
A specialist drugs dog sniffed out the stash hidden in two parked cars, which were promptly seized and towed away. Officers also hit two shops on Manchester Road and Fleet Street, uncovering nearly £2,000 in illegal vapes.
Links to Organised Crime
Sergeant Winter from the Swindon Central South NPT warned the public about the wider impact:
“The sale of illicit tobacco funnels cash straight to organised criminals. These gangs are often tied to child exploitation, people trafficking, modern slavery, and illegal working, causing major harm to our communities.”
He urged locals to think twice before buying illegal tobacco, stressing it funds dangerous criminal networks operating close to home.
Health Hazards and Community Safety
Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, Councillor Jim Grant, highlighted the public health dangers:
“Illegal tobacco isn’t made to safety standards and often contains more harmful substances and banned chemicals than legal products.”
He praised the joint operation as a “huge success” in safeguarding the health and safety of Swindon residents.
Spot Something Suspicious? Speak Up!
Officials urge the public to report any suspicions about illicit tobacco sales. Tips can be passed on to Trading Standards South West at www.tssw.org.uk/work-areas/report-it.
The investigation is ongoing, with more enforcement raids expected. Keep your community safe – don’t buy illegal tobacco!
