Barnsley Disability Charity Hit by Second Brazen Theft
A cherished charity in Barnsley that supports people with disabilities has been struck by thieves again, leaving staff and volunteers devastated.
Barnsley Riding for the Disabled (RDA), known for its therapeutic horse riding sessions for individuals facing physical and emotional challenges, was targeted in a bold theft on Sunday night, just after closing time.
Thieves Steal Electric Tools and Pink Wheelbarrow
Burglars made off with valuable equipment, including an electric tool set and a standout pink wheelbarrow. Witnesses spotted the culprit heading towards Kendray over the pit stack.
This is the second time Barnsley RDA has been hit in under a year. Back in July 2024, thieves smashed through the roof, causing significant damage and stealing more equipment. The earlier attack sparked outrage across the local community.
Volunteers Left Disheartened by Repeat Crime
Volunteers say the repeated break-ins have shattered their spirits and raised serious security worries.
“It’s heartbreaking to see our centre targeted again. We work hard to provide a safe, supportive environment for those who benefit so much from our sessions. Every theft is not just a financial blow—it’s an emotional one too,” said a Barnsley RDA spokesperson.
Community Lifeline at Risk
Barnsley RDA is more than just a riding centre – it offers vital therapeutic sessions that improve coordination and mental wellbeing for people with disabilities.
After last year’s break-in, Barnsley’s Mayor John Clarke chipped in £1,000 to boost security. But despite upgrades, the charity remains a target for criminals.
Police Seek Witnesses to Latest Theft
South Yorkshire Police confirmed they are probing the latest crime and have urged the public to come forward with any information.
“We are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity near the centre or who has information about the stolen equipment to get in touch. Even the smallest detail could help with our enquiries,” a police spokesperson said.
If you know anything, call 101 quoting the incident number or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Supporters are encouraged to share any tips and stand with Barnsley RDA during this tough time.
