Van hits pedestrians on the Strand in London — one feared dead, another fights for life

A serious collision involving a van and several pedestrians has left one person feared dead and another critically injured on the Strand in central London, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.

The incident occurred near the entrance to King’s College London at around 11:50am  Emergency services rushed to the scene, where graphic images showed paramedics administering CPR to one victim lying on the pavement.

The Metropolitan Police said early indications suggest the incident is not terror-related.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB) also responded, with two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Dowgate and Lambeth stations assisting at the scene.

A police source at the scene  said: “We can confirm that a van struck a number of pedestrians on the Strand. One individual is feared to have died at the scene. A second person has sustained life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital.”

The Strand has been closed to westbound traffic from Surrey Street to Waterloo Bridge while emergency crews continue their work. Eastbound traffic remains open at this time.

King’s College London has released a statement saying they are “aware of the incident” and are working with the emergency services to gather more information.

Police have cordoned off the area and are urging the public to avoid the vicinity while investigations continue. Officers are also appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the collision.
