A wave of fish and chip lovers descended on Harry Ramsden’s Brighton Seafront branch today (Saturday), after the iconic chain offered 500 portions of fish and chips for just 7p – the original price when the business was founded in 1928.
The one-day-only promotion, which kicked off at 12pm, drew large crowds to the restaurant on Brighton’s seafront, with eager customers queueing well before doors opened. Some early birds (I know they catch the worm) were seen lining up as early as 9am, wrapped in coats and chatting excitedly as the queue got longer by the minute..
Staff at the venue handed out vouchers to the first in line, securing their place in Harry Ramsden history – and scoring one of the cheapest fish and chip meals seen in decades. However, the overwhelming turnout meant many left empty-handed, having missed the cut.
“I thought I was being clever turning up at 10am, but the queue was already long,” said Sarah from Kemptown. “Still, it was nice to see such a buzz around a traditional chippy”
Katie who.was.visiting Brighton and come across this promotion by chance, she said “the kids don’t often have fish and chips, this was a nice treat for them”
The offer was launched as a nod to Harry Ramsden’s near-century-old legacy, with the symbolic 7p price reflecting what a portion would have cost when the brand opened its first shop in 1928 in Yorkshire.
The Brighton Seafront store, part of a national chain, was one of a few select locations across the UK to take part in the nostalgic event. By 2.50pm, the queue had cleared and the promo portions were all gone, except for the one pictured that I was lucky to get– but many stayed to enjoy the full-priced menu or take in the atmosphere of the buzzing seafront scene.
“It’s been a brilliant day,” said a store spokesperson. “We knew people loved a bargain, but the response has been amazing. It’s a reminder of just how much people still value classic British food – especially when it’s tied to a bit of history.”
Social media lit up with photos of long queues and celebratory posts from those lucky enough to grab one of the discounted meals. One customer joked that the queue was “longer than for a summer ice cream,” while others praised the restaurant for the nostalgic throwback.
With such a strong turnout, there’s speculation that Harry Ramsden’s may run similar events in the future – but for now, Brighton’s early risers were the clear winners of the day.
