World’s Oldest Firefighter Dies Peacefully at 105

The London Fire Brigade has paid tribute to John “Jack” Corbett, the oldest retired firefighter in the world, who died peacefully in his sleep just two weeks after a special honour at his Essex care home.

Legend of the London Fire Brigade

Jack Corbett was 105 years old and the oldest living person to have served with the London Fire Brigade. Born in Woking in August 1910, he joined the London Auxiliary Fire Service during World War II, protecting iconic landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral during the Blitz. He narrowly escaped death when a bomb landed near his fire station in Clerkenwell.

After the war, Jack became a professional firefighter in 1941 and served at fire stations including Fortis Green and Hornsey before retiring in 1965.

Honoured on Brigade’s 150th Anniversary

The Brigade marked its 150th anniversary by hosting a special presentation at Jack’s care home. Attendees included his family, friends, and senior figures such as Deputy Assistant Commissioner Allen Perez, representatives from the London Fire Brigade Retired Members Association, and Essex Fire and Rescue Service.

“Jack was and still is a firefighter through and through. He had a real devotion to duty and was always proud to wear his uniform,”

– Pamela Shrimpton, Jack’s daughter

From ‘Army Dodgers’ to ‘Heroes with Grimy Faces’

Before the Blitz, public opinion of firefighters was poor, with many seen as “army dodgers.” But during the 1940 bombing campaign, attitudes shifted dramatically. Firefighters like Jack became wartime heroes, risking their lives night after night.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Allen Perez said, “It is an honour to meet someone who played a part in our history with his actions during the Blitz. Firefighters today follow in his footsteps to keep London safe.”

A Lifetime of Service and History

  • Jack served as Fireman, Leading Fireman, and Section Leader.
  • During his lifetime, the Brigade had 14 Chiefs and Commissioners.
  • When he was born, firefighters still wore brass helmets and used horse-drawn vehicles.

Jack’s remarkable life and career spanned some of the most dramatic moments in firefighting history. He will be remembered as a true legend of the London Fire Brigade.
