Selsey Coastguard Teams Rush In After Live Ordnance Found at Medmerry Beach
Selsey Coastguard squads sprang into action on Saturday morning when a member of the public discovered live ordnance on Medmerry Beach.
Beach Locked Down for Safety
Authorities immediately set up a cordon and shut the beach to the public. During a thorough search, more suspicious items were uncovered and reported to the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
Specialist Team Handles Explosives
The bomb squad from Portsmouth arrived to assess and secure the dangerous finds. They safely carried out a controlled explosion just after 2.30pm, neutralising the threat to beachgoers and residents.
Coastguard Warns Public: Don’t Touch Suspicious Objects
- If you spot any ordnance or unknown items on the beach, do not touch.
- Call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
- Ordnance can come in many sizes and is often highly explosive.
“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble. Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
This incident is a stark reminder to always be cautious around suspicious objects found on beaches. The quick work of the Coastguard and EOD team ensured Medmerry Beach is safe once again.
