Chaos in Trafalgar Square: 32 Arrested After Protest Turns Violent
A peaceful protest in central London has ended in chaos with 32 arrests made, police confirm.
Police Faced Violence as Protesters Refused to Leave
On Saturday, 19 September, demonstrators gathered at Trafalgar Square. Officers tried to manage the crowd all day using the four Es approach – Explain, Engage, Encourage, and Enforce. Despite repeated requests, many refused to disperse, risking public safety amid the ongoing health crisis.
Violence erupted as officers were targeted during the standoff, forcing the police Command Team to act decisively to clear the area just after 6pm.
Arrests and Injuries After Hostile Confrontation
- 32 people arrested for violent disorder, public order offences, assault on emergency workers, and breaches of Covid regulations
- Two police officers suffered minor injuries
- Trafalgar Square was fully cleared, restoring calm to the area
Gold Commander Warns Against Putting Others at Risk
“We remain in the middle of a public health crisis, and by gathering in large numbers – such as today’s protest – puts others at risk. We advised those in attendance to leave but many refused to do so,” said Superintendent Emma Richards, Gold Commander.
“The hostility shown towards officers, who were simply there to keep people safe, is unacceptable. More than 30 people were arrested and they remain in custody.
“The area around Trafalgar Square has now been cleared, allowing Londoners to continue with their Saturday evening, whilst adhering to government advice.”
Follow the Rules to Keep Safe
While the majority of Londoners are complying with regulations, the message is clear: keep social distancing, respect Covid rules, and protect yourself, your friends, and family.
There are lawful exemptions for certain gatherings, including those organised by businesses or charities with risk assessments, work-related events, sports activities, protests, and emergency assistance. For full details, visit legislation.gov.uk.
