Met Cracks Down on COVID Rule Breakers as Cases Rise in London

The Met Police are ramping up enforcement of COVID regulations across the capital. This comes as infection rates climb and new rules come into force.

More Police on the Streets, Eyes on Crowded Hotspots

Londoners should expect to see officers out and about, engaging with the public to remind them of their responsibilities. The focus will be on busy public spaces where transmission risk is highest.

The Met is teaming up with local councils and partners to tackle the issue head-on while continuing their core mission of fighting crime, particularly violence.

Firm But Fair: The Met’s ‘4 Es’ Strategy

  • Engage: Officers will talk to people on the ground.
  • Explain: They’ll clarify the latest rules.
  • Encourage: Police will urge compliance.
  • Enforce: Action will be taken if rules are flagrantly broken.

Every London borough will have officers ready to respond swiftly to serious breaches.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist Speaks Out

“The vast majority of Londoners have stuck to the rules and responded positively to the unprecedented situation we are in. We thank them for that.

“Despite the relaxation of rules, officers have tackled challenging incidents like unlicensed music events—sometimes facing hostility and violence. In many cases, proactive policing prevented these events altogether.

“Now, there’s a renewed need for everyone to do their bit to minimise transmission of this potentially deadly disease. Our officers will explain the regulations but will firmly deal with those who deliberately break the law and put communities at risk.”

“We urge people to report serious breaches via 101 or online. But remember, some exemptions apply; not every call will trigger an immediate police response.

“With crime and other demands returning to normal levels, the Met will juggle these alongside COVID enforcement to keep Londoners safe.”
