Conman Matthew Normyle Jailed for Nearly Three Years Over £87k Boiler Scam

Matthew Normyle, from Lord Street, Morecambe, was locked up for two years and 10 months at Manchester Crown Court today (Tuesday 4 January 2022) after being found guilty of fraud by false representation. A Proceeds of Crime hearing will follow to claw back his ill-gotten gains.

£87,250 Scam Spanning Salford to Rochdale

Normyle pulled off his dirty deeds while living in Salford and Rochdale, swindling a total of £87,250. He hoodwinked friends, former colleagues, and even his ex-partner with fake investment schemes and bogus boiler repairs.

Fake Boiler Business Fooled Friends and Family

  • Normyle tricked his victims by inventing Elite Heating, a bogus boiler company supposedly supplying a building firm. In reality, it never existed.
  • His first victim, a friend since 2012, invested £25,000. Normyle spun a web of lies involving a fake accountant “Howie” and phantom legal disputes to delay payouts indefinitely.
  • The second victim, desperate and trusting, borrowed money and raided savings meant for his children to invest £25,500 – only to get back £10,000 after false promises and excuses.
  • A third victim handed over £26,000 after being fooled by fabricated dealings with the same fake building company.
  • Other victims, including former colleagues and Normyle’s ex-partner, lost thousands more to the conman’s elaborate scam.

Boiler Repairs Used to Squeeze Even More Cash

Normyle also exploited a long-term customer, claiming new boilers were unsafe or faulty to demand expensive “repairs”. His greed knew no bounds.

Police Nab Fraudster Returning From Spain

After victims grew suspicious and reported him, Normyle was arrested at Manchester Airport on 28 May 2021 upon returning from Spain. He’d been dodging detectives and refusing to cooperate.

Detective Constable Clara Williams said: “Normyle made the despicable decision to take advantage of his friends, colleagues and former partner to pay off his own debts and fund his own lifestyle. His actions have devastated those around him. He lived well beyond his means and racked up debts with loan companies. While we’re glad he’s behind bars, we’ll continue pursuing his ill-gotten gains through Proceeds of Crime legislation.”
