Blackburn Fraud Squad Strikes Back: Three Arrested in Major Courier Scam Raid
Massive Raids Shake Blackburn Fraud Ring
Early this morning, police swooped on properties across Blackburn, hitting addresses on Azalea Road, Waterloo Close, and Moorgate Street. The crackdown led to the arrest of three men – aged 37, 47, and 48 – on serious fraud and money laundering charges. All are currently in custody while investigations continue.
Operation Fardel: Unravelling a Nationwide Courier Scam
The arrests are the latest twist in Operation Fardel, an extensive probe launched back in November 2021. It targets a ruthless courier fraud network that has fooled victims across the UK since summer 2020.
Hundreds of reports flooded in, with 30 victims admitting eye-watering losses totalling £650,000. Thankfully, many managed to claw their cash back through their banks.
But some tales are devastating. One elderly woman from Tarleton was duped out of £200,000 by a fraudster posing as a bank official. He manipulated her into handing over bank details and even buying goods that a fake courier collected from her doorstep.
Cracking the Case: Tech and Tenacity
Police pieced together mobile phone data and CCTV footage from across England to trace the scammers back to Blackburn. The raids yielded a haul of incriminating devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and iPads.
“Victims of courier fraud are caught off guard by expert criminals who use ruthless tactics to pressure them into acting immediately,” said Detective Inspector Mark Riley of the Lancashire Police Economic Crime Unit. “It’s not just about money – the emotional scarring runs deep.”
“This offending has hit vulnerable people countrywide. Today’s warrants aim to deliver justice and prevent further heartbreak.”
Part of a Bigger Fight Against Fraud
The Blackburn raids come hot on the heels of a national blitz under the Home Office’s Project Plutus, targeting organised crime gangs involved in fraud.
This week alone, authorities seized £250,000 linked to money laundering in Blackpool, showing the scale of the crackdown across Lancashire.
Lancashire Police & Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden praised the operation: “It was great to join officers in Blackburn, cracking down on those who exploit victims and wreck lives. Fraudsters targeting the vulnerable need to know we are coming for them and will take them off the streets.”
