Historic Yacht Rescued Off Christchurch Bay by Yarmouth Lifeboat Crew
Yarmouth RNLI Launches Rescue Mission
On Tuesday 7 June 2022, HM Coastguard called out Yarmouth’s Severn-class all-weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), at 2:08pm to assist a stricken 48ft motor yacht near Christchurch Bay.
The volunteer crew sped west from the Solent to find a vessel with steering failure battling 15–18 knot southwesterly winds and choppy seas.
Not Just Any Boat — A Historic 1934 Cruiser
Upon arrival, rescuers found the classic motor cruiser Estrallita, built in 1934, struggling against the elements. Her two-man crew, both ex-Royal Navy vets, had been keeping her steady with the engines while awaiting help.
The coxswain quickly decided a tow was the safest option. They secured an alongside tow and carefully guided the 87-year-old “Dunkirk little ship” back into Yarmouth harbour.
Charity Cruise Hits a Snag
Estrallita and her crew were on a heartfelt mission — a fundraising cruise from Norfolk along the south coast, supporting SSAFA and Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital.
They aim to complete essential repairs and continue to St Katherine Dock, London, by 17 June 2022.
RNLI Ready for Next Call
The Yarmouth lifeboat returned to base at 5:15pm, ready for action once more. The RNLI remains a fully independent charity funded entirely by public donations.
