Nice Terror Attack: Driver Shot Dead as Bastille Day Turns Deadly
A driver was shot dead by police after wreaking havoc on Nice’s famous seaside promenade during Bastille Day celebrations on 14th July. Crowds had gathered to celebrate when the deadly rampage unfolded, causing chaos and devastation.
Main Defendant Slapped with 18-Year Jail Term
The driver’s close friend, labelled the main defendant, was found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation and sentenced to 18 years behind bars. Two other men were also convicted for helping the attacker obtain weapons and the truck used in the deadly assault. They received 18 and 12-year sentences respectively.
Seven Others Sentenced for Supporting Roles
- Seven men and one woman were handed punishments ranging from two to eight years.
- Three were charged with terrorist group membership.
- The remaining five faced common law charges, including defying gun laws.
The verdicts can still be appealed.
Survivors Slam Trial for Lack of Direct Responsibility
Survivors criticised the court for not charging the defendants with direct involvement or complicity in the attack. Despite Islamic State claiming responsibility days later, authorities found no proof the attacker had any contact with the group.
Historic Rulings Close Terror Cases
The trial follows the wrap-up of the 2015 Paris terror attacks case, where all 20 defendants were convicted earlier this year. Both high-profile court cases are now archived as landmark verdicts in France’s fight against terrorism.
