Chaos in South East London as Water Main Bursts, Flooding Streets
A massive water main burst has turned Eltham Road, Greenwich, into a flood zone this morning (Friday, January 6). Transport for London (TfL) has declared a major incident. Emergency crews raced to the scene to rescue trapped residents and help schoolchildren navigate the flooded streets.
Eltham Road Turned Into A River – Firefighters Rescue Residents
Thousands of homes across Greenwich and Lewisham are now without water or suffering from low pressure due to the burst pipe. The flooded road near shops and restaurants has caused chaos, with Lee Green Fire Station itself affected by the leak.
- Firefighters used boats to evacuate residents trapped by rising waters.
- About 150 schoolchildren were helped safely across the floodwaters.
- The road is shut from Burnt Ash Road (A2212) to Weigall Road as crews tackle the mess.
Services Scramble to Fix Worst Burst Pipe in SE London
Ten fire engines flooded with boats have been deployed to the scene. Thames Water teams are working hard to repair the huge burst on A20 Eltham Road. Postcodes SE3, SE7, SE9, SE10, SE12, SE13, and SE15 are especially hit, with many residents left struggling for water.
Thames Water said: “We sincerely apologise if you are experiencing low or no water pressure as a result of a large burst pipe on the A20 Eltham Road in SE12 early this morning. We’re on the scene and working to stop the flow caused by the burst. After that, supplies should begin to return to the affected area.”
“We also apologise to drivers inconvenienced by the A20 closure.”
Residents Urged to Avoid Flooded Zone
Road closures remain in place as emergency services continue rescue and repair efforts. Drivers and pedestrians are warned to steer clear of Eltham Road until the area is declared safe.
