£1 Million Flood Defences Rolled Out in Flood-Hit York
The Environment Agency is shelling out £1 million to fit over 100 flood protection measures in homes and businesses across York. The city, no stranger to flooding, saw severe deluges back in 2000 and again in 2015, when more than 620 properties were swamped.
Villages Naburn and Acaster Malbis in the Floodline
Residents in York’s surrounding villages like Naburn and Acaster Malbis have suffered badly, with floodwaters creeping in through doorways and air bricks, wrecking furniture and homes alike. The new scheme will fit flood barriers, self-closing air bricks, non-return valves, and pumps to keep water out.
The installations run until December, funded by the Environment Agency, aiming to cut the damage floods cause and get life back on track faster for locals.
Flood Chief: “Resilience Is Key”
Paul Stockhill, Environment Agency Area Flood Risk Manager, said:
“We can’t wipe out flood risk with climate change worsening, but we can help communities toughen up. While big defences are vital, sometimes home-level protection is the answer. We hope this gives York residents peace of mind, less damage, and speedier recoveries.
“This £1 million is part of a £45 million push to boost York’s flood defences, alongside £38 million upgrading the Foss Barrier. Together, we’re shielding over 2,000 properties.”
Local Resident Praises New Defences
Stanley Shoobridge, 92, Acaster Malbis resident:
“I’m thrilled with my new flood barriers—they’re simple to fit. Before, I had to haul sandbags into place. When floods hit, I’m stranded, only reachable by people in waders. Now it’s far easier to protect my home.”
“Living in an 18th-century cottage, I also faced underground seepage, but the new pumps fix that. The four automatic air grates mean I no longer worry about blocking them up.”
City Council Hails Major Investment
Cllr Paula Widdowson, Executive Member for Climate Change and the Environment, City of York Council:
“Protecting homes and businesses is vital as floods grow more frequent. This fresh funding strengthens defences for villagers in Naburn and Acaster Malbis and builds on city-wide efforts.”
“Thanks to the £110 million flood alleviation programme with the Environment Agency, over 2,000 York properties now have better protection. We’re driving crucial schemes to help communities face flooding and climate change head-on.”
